Independent Reading #1
Huxley's "Brave New World"--Response 2 of 4
Pgs. 87-152; Chapters 6-10

This particular part of the novel, I should say, would be my favorite. A lot has happened. Lenina and Bernard Marx have visited the Savage Reservation, whereupon discovering a woman whose name is Linda. She was well acquainted with the Director- Thomas. A few years ago, the Director and Linda also visited the Savage Reservation. When Linda took a walk, she never came back. What happened was that she fell and the savages helped her. She has been an outcast since because her views of the world were different. She then bore a child who was named John and is the son of the Director. Linda did not know how this phenomenal event occurred since she was on contraceptives and has done “the drill” as expected. The son of the Director and Linda was also an outcast, a misfit because he doesn’t belong there and because his mother was considered a “she-dog.” It was incredibly hard for him to find someone who wouldn’t shun him from the group. Why is this one of my favorite scenes? It's because this is where a history is unearthed. This is where we discover that Linda, a former member of the "brave new world" society, bore a child. His name-John.
What I found amusing was how he learned how to further his reading skills. Seriously, he read Shakespeare. He must have had a lot of determination to continue his education in literature in a savage reservation. We all know how complex and amazingly difficult it is to even interpret Shakespeare, so I commend John. I also thought it was sweet that Linda taught her son how to read. Is this her maternal instinct of love kicking in? Even though she has no prior experience whatsoever in raising a child, instincts always prevail. No wonder why his English was so weird, according to Bernard. Bernard then realizes who Linda was and what her relations was to the Director and begins to hatch a plan so foul, that it had to help him in this dangerous time.
My favorite part of these chapters was how much Linda has changed. We humans are naturally resilient. We learn easily and can adapt when it the need arises. Linda discovers some sort of alcohol from the tribe that was given to her from this guy named Pope. He ends up making her have a hangover. She swore it made her feel like she took a couple grammes of soma, except that she had a nasty hangover after that. I must remind you that soma does not give you any side effects. I am still skeptical over that. I mean, too much of a good thing can be bad. I always follow moderation because that’s healthy. I wonder if soma plays a huge part in this story and links everything to each other. Let’s see, soma is a drug with “no side effects.” As far as I know, every drug has side effects. Maybe the authorities just don’t want to release any information about that drug because that would mess up their “brave new world.” Apparently, not in this brave new world.
